One day a friend showed me, what I thought, was a piece of fruit.  It was small and green, so I naturally assumed it was a lime.

I cannot tell you how shocked I was when she told me it was an unripened walnut!

As I held this walnut to inspect it more closely, I heard the Lord say to me, “Though it’s not what you expect, this is what My work looks like in your life right now.”

So often, we look for God and what He is doing in our lives in ways that we expect Him to move:

-we expect Him to move like He did in past seasons of our lives

-we expect Him to do things the way we want Him to

-we expect Him to move in ways we understand

-we expect Him to understand our fears and not push us in those areas

But as I looked at this small walnut – that was not AT ALL what I expected it to be - I realized the Lord was telling me that what He was doing in my life would not look like I expected it to.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure I was happy to hear that.

“Though it’s not what you expect, this is what My work looks like in your life right now.”

But the Lord told me I was to ask Him to show me what He was doing in my life instead of only looking for Him in the ways I’d expected Him to move.

And as I asked, that’s when the Lord began to show me and I began to see it – a move of God unlike anything He had done in me before.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says,

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.   “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.  For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways  and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

So many times I look at my life through my own understanding and I judge and evaluate what God is doing – or not doing - based on what I think should be happening, how I feel or what I understand. But God is always up to something far beyond what I can imagine or come up with. I've begun to ask Him to help me see what He is working in my life and it’s helping me see what He was already doing all along!

Can I tell you that I actually feel hope growing in my heart because of this?  I am reminded that I don’t have to “figure out” what God is doing in my life.  I am excitedly anticipating what He is showing me He has been up to, because it is far greater than anything I could plan for myself!

Take a moment today to surrender your expectations to God and ask Him to show you what He is doing in your life.  You will begin to see God’s good work happening all around you.  It may not look like you think it will, but it will be far greater than what you expected!
