How can you as parents really give positive feedback to your preteens? You know those 5th and 6th graders who on days drive you crazy and on other days make you so proud.

It is at this age, we want to move them even more to being outward focused. Here are a few ways to postitively pour into your preteen.

Participation: Never tell preteens they responded with the wrong answer. Instead, praise them for thier participation and effort.

Presence: Attend preteens' sporting events, recitals, or school performances. Just being at their event will be encouragement for their efforts.

Service: Provide opportunities for preteens to serve. They really do want to be part of something bigger than them.

Personalization: Give your kids positive feedback and praise that is unique to them.

I believe it is very important for preteens to start thinking about ministry opportunities now and for them to begin pursuing them. Begin asking them what they think God is "calling" them to. Have them write it down, pray over it together. Then be sure to do all you can to create opportunities to see it happen.

That is what we do in Champs. Every time we have an opportunity we ask a preteen to serve, or help out. It exposes them to endless possibilities.

Remember in my last blog I gave you the definition of entitlement? The
opposite of entitlement to me is a servant. It is so opposite of what
the world strives for. In the world power, success, money, being at
the top is what matters. In God's economy it is clear about what He
calls us to. Servanthood.

Now
don't get me wrong, serving others is not natural to our culture, it is
however supernatural in origin. Serving others is one of the most
powerful spiritual weapons we have. There is probably nothing more
unnatural than serving lost people with no strings attached in our
"me-first" culture.

Our attitude is one of the thing we have
control over. Our attitude shapes the way we think about serving
others, and servanthood is the attitude critical for personal
fulfillment. Our attitude is the first things we pass on to our
children.

We can't change the way people act, or your past, or
the gifts you hav or don't have and you can't change circumstances that
slime you. But attitude probably has more to do with the direction of
your life - something you can change.

The
change must begin with us as parents. Take this week to find one area
in your attitude that you can make a change in with regards to serving
others. Watch what a difference it will make in you and your children.

Pastor Julie

At a time that you may be asking what can and cannot be done in public schools regarding Christmas, here is the legal answer to those questions.

Remember our kids should be a "light" wherever they are!

The Twelve Rules of Christmas®

(Compiled by attorneys for The Rutherford Institute)

Unfortunately,
Christmas has become a time of controversy over what can or cannot be
done in terms of celebrating the holiday. In order to clear up much of
the misunderstanding, the following twelve rules are offered:

Public
school students’ written or spoken personal expressions concerning the
religious significance of Christmas (e.g., T-shirts with the slogan,
“Jesus Is the Reason for the Season”) may not be censored by school
officials absent evidence that the speech would cause a substantial
disruption.1

So
long as teachers are generally permitted to wear clothing or jewelry or
have personal items expressing their views about the holidays,
Christian teachers may not be prohibited from similarly expressing
their views by wearing Christmas-related clothing or jewelry or
carrying Christmas-related personal items.2

Public
schools may teach students about the Christmas holiday, including its
religious significance, so long as it is taught objectively for secular
purposes such as its historical or cultural importance, and not for the
purpose of promoting Christianity.3

Public
school teachers may send Christmas cards to the families of their
students so long as they do so on their own time, outside of school
hours.4

Public
schools may include Christmas music, including those with religious
themes, in their choral programs if the songs are included for a
secular purpose such as their musical quality or cultural value or if
the songs are part of an overall performance including other holiday
songs relating to Chanukah, Kwanzaa, or other similar holidays.5

Public
schools may not require students to sing Christmas songs whose messages
conflict with the students’ own religious or nonreligious beliefs.6

Public
school students may not be prohibited from distributing literature to
fellow students concerning the Christmas holiday or invitations to
church Christmas events on the same terms that they would be allowed to
distribute other literature that is not related to schoolwork.7

Private
citizens or groups may display crèches or other Christmas symbols in
public parks subject to the same reasonable time, place, and manner
restrictions that would apply to other similar displays.8

Government
entities may erect and maintain celebrations of the Christmas holiday,
such as Christmas trees and Christmas light displays, and may include
crèches in their displays at least so long as the purpose for including
the crèche is not to promote its religious content and it is placed in
context with other symbols of the Holiday season as part of an effort
to celebrate the public Christmas holiday through its traditional
symbols.9

Neither
public nor private employers may prevent employees from decorating
their offices for Christmas, playing Christmas music, or wearing
clothing related to Christmas merely because of their religious content
so long as these activities are not used to harass or intimidate others.10

Public
or private employees whose sincerely held religious beliefs require
that they not work on Christmas must be reasonably accommodated by
their employers unless granting the accommodation would impose an undue
hardship on the employer.11

Government
recognition of Christmas as a public holiday and granting government
employees a paid holiday for Christmas does not violate the
Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.12
Seems like being a Children's Pastor that I should write my blog about being a parent or how kids learn the Bible, or ...

The longer I am in Children's Ministry the more I know; if we as the parents are healthy in all areas of our lives that our kids have a better chance of being healthy as they grow into young teens and adults.

I know I'm a little slow on the uptake and you probably all know that already. But since I'm sharing my new found revelation with you; you'll have to indulge me from time to time as I write about things that apply to us as adults. My hope and prayer is if we are doing the right thing, our kids with "CATCH" it and do the same. Don't kid yourself, we still need to parent and coach our kids, but working on us, may be understated! So here I go:

In John 15, Jesus describes sustainability in this manner: “Abide in Me, and
I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the
vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the Vine, you are the
branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from
me you can do nothing. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you
that you would bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain” (John 15:4, 5, 16
NKJV).

David’s life is a great example regarding sustainability. His
“abiding” is seen through his constant inquiring of the Lord about every
situation in his early life. Unfortunately, we also see the sad
results for David, his family, and the nation of Israel when he moved away from
this dependency on God. The downfall began when David became confident in his
own ability to lead and make decisions on his own.

What about us? Are we living sustainable lives? Our depth of soul comes from the well of life in the Holy
Spirit. That well draws our roots deep, which in turn produces healthy branches
tightly grafted to the vine. A tree full of healthy fruit is a great picture of
what our lives can be when we are tightly grafted to Jesus
Christ. This is the posture of sustainable fruitfulness.

Just some light thinking for a Monday morning!

Pastor Julie

Here is an article written by Chuck Colson that I thought was interesting. We need Holy Spirit direction in raising our kids so that we have a balance in them walking in who God says they are and instilling a humility in them at the same time!

Rude

Overdeveloped Self-Esteem

May 21,
2009

A recent report on
MSNBC suggested that parents’ pre-occupation with their kids’ self-esteem may
have produced “rude” children who lack compassion for
others.

According to MSNBC,
“many experts say today’s kids are ruder than ever.” The word “rude” encompasses
a variety of behaviors, from selfishness to deliberate malice. In one example, a
pre-schooler deliberately tripped a woman in a crowded restaurant and then
bragged to her mother about it. In another, a child continuously insults his
mother in front of his mortified grandmother.

In both cases, the
parent neither says nor does anything.

Apparently, these
aren’t isolated instances: a 2005 Yale University study found that “preschool
students are expelled at a rate more than three times that of children in grades
K-12 because of behavioral problems.”

It isn’t only
preschoolers. The media has documented the behavior in the workplace of those
born between 1980 and 1996. Words used to describe the behavior of the so-called
“Generation Y” include “self-centered” and “arrogant.” As one management
professor put it, “They don’t know when to shut up.” And having grown up
questioning their parents, they now question their
bosses.

Whether or not
today’s kids are actually “ruder than ever,” the article and others like it
reflect the sense that something has gone wrong in the way we raise our
children. Specifically, it has to do with “popular parenting movements focusing
on self-esteem.”

These movements
produce parents who “[respond] with hostility to anyone they perceive as getting
in the child’s way.” By “getting in the child’s way,” they mean doing anything
that might make the child feel less-than-wonderful about him or herself—in the
classroom, among their peers, or on the playing
field.

So today we have a
generation of children who believe that the world revolves around them and that
they are entitled to feel good about themselves. (my underline)

Expecting children
raised this way to be compassionate or even polite betrays a profound ignorance
of human nature—the same ignorance that led to the “popular parenting movements”
that created the mess in the first place.

These movements were
inspired by the ideas of Romantic Enlightenment thinkers like Jean-Jacques
Rousseau. According to Rousseau, “There is no original perversity in the human
heart.” So, he says, “when children’s wills are not spoiled by our fault,
children [desire] nothing uselessly.” So parents and teachers should strive to
produce children who are “authentic, self-sufficient, and
autonomous.”

According to E.D.
Hirsch, this Romantic ideal that “each person has a natural and uniquely divine
spark, which, if nurtured, cannot go wrong,” is behind the emphasis on
self-esteem. The problem, as Hirsch points out, is that there is no proven
connection between high self-esteem and actual
achievement.

In other words,
feeling good about yourself isn’t enough to make you good. You have to be taught
right from wrong and made to feel bad when you deserve it. As the Scripture
says, true parental devotion includes the willingness to correct our
children.

The alternative
isn’t “authenticity”—it’s spoiling their wills in the worst possible
way.

It's Monday morning and I don't know about you but I am still pondering (chewing on) the message that Pastor's Marty and Debbie delivered at church yesterday.

I believe the title was The Holy Spirit as the One who Convicts and Who Convinces. I had not really thought about the Holy Spirit being the one to convince me.

Oh don't get me wrong I know the Holy Spirit brings conviction. Just be married for a short amount of time and you will know that it doesn't matter what we say to our spouses or vice versa, but if the Holy Spirit speaks, well then...changes happen almost immediately don't they?

I began to think through the last several years of my life in my mind and the changes that I have made, asking myself the question, how long did it take the Holy Spirit to convince me to be obedient to the conviction that He had already spoken to me?

As parents, spouses, siblings, friends, volunteers etc, we have the ability to help our own process go so much faster. Once the conviction comes, we really can say yes and die to ourselves so that we can repent and move on. Why do we take so long?

All we have to do is look at our kids for the answer. Remember we were their age once. Wanting our own way, positive that we know best. Believing that no one understands how "bad" our life is or how "hard" our situation is. Ahh, but there is One who does and who loves us so much who wants the best for us and knows the best for us. Just like we do for our kids.

If we want to model health to our kids and to the next generation, we MUST be willing to hear the Holy Spirit for our own lives, be convinced that He has our best interest at heart and respond by our actions.

We are NOT the Holy Spirit to our spouses or our kids, however...there is power in our actions. Remember things are "caught" not "taught." Let's stop being stubborn and demanding our own way and say yes to the ONE who loves us deeply and can see so much farther down the road than we can!

Pastor Julie

Positive things that happen at camps:

1. New relationships are started, built and often last a life time.

2. Children walk away with a deeper understanding of God's love for them apart from their parents.

3. Learning to be responsible for their personal belongings as well as respecting others.

4. Many make a commitment to Jesus for the first time by asking him to be Lord of their lives.

5. Many have heard God call them to full time ministry.

6. They receive and hear teaching that goes deep into their hearts and minds that continues to build the solid foundation they need in growing into disciples of Jesus.

7. Learn to interact, share, and be part of something bigger than they are!

If you need more information please call me at the office. 661.252.7255 ext. 306. Cost of camp is $175 it includes transportation. Dates: June 26-30th.

Blessings,
