RESPONSIBILITY

Responsibility - Characteristic #3

Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices

Proverbs 25:28  A person without self–control  is like a city with broken–down walls.

I Peter 1:13: So think clearly and exercise self-control.  Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.

Romans 12:8  If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

Deut. 22:1  If you see your neighbor’s ox or sheep or goat wandering away, don’t ignore your responsibility. Take it back to its owner.

Great Example of Trustworthiness

Remember a few posts back I started a series on "Character Counts?"  Well I haven't forgotten to continue, I've just taken a couple of detours.  But...today I read a great story on the web in the sports section that absolutely models our first character value of TRUSTWORTHINESS.

Here is a reminder of that definition: Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable — do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thingBuild a good reputation • Be loyal — stand by your family, friends and country.

Please take a moment to share this story with your kids.  It is a GREAT current example of what I hope you are instilling in them. This was on Yahoo sports page.

J.P. Hayes is as honest as we like to think we are

By that standard, then, J.P. Hayes is among the best that sports has to offer. He played a nonconforming ball for a single hole of the second stage of Q School last weekend. He realized it more than a day after the "violation," called it on himself, and thus disqualified himself from Q School ... with some severe, career-altering effects down the line.

So how did this go down? So easily, you'll cringe:

On his 12th hole of the first round at Deerwood Country Club last Wednesday, Hayes' caddie reached into his golf bag, pulled out a ball and flipped it to Hayes, who missed the green with his tee shot. He then chipped on and marked his ball. It was then that Hayes realized the ball was not the same model Titleist with which he had started his round. That was in violation of the one-ball rule, which stipulates that a player must play the same model throughout a round.

Okay, so, two-stroke penalty, no big deal. He recovered well enough to put himself in position to finish in the top 20 and advance to the third and final round of Q School. The top 25 finishers in that round, plus ties, earn exempt status for the entire 2009 PGA season. So, breathe deep, think about how close you came to disaster, then tee it up for the next round.

Only, while Hayes was breathing deep, he realized something else -- not only did he play the wrong ball, he might have played a ball that wasn't even approved for play at all.

"It was a Titleist prototype, and somehow it had gotten into my bag," he said. "It had been four weeks since Titleist gave me some prototype balls and I tested them. I have no idea how or why it was still in there ... I called an official in Houston that night and said, 'I think I may have a problem. He said they'd call Titleist the next day. I pretty much knew at that point I was going to be disqualified."

Now, the easy move here would be to either do nothing or blame the caddy. Hayes rose above both those temptations, putting all the blame on himself and asserting that everybody else on the PGA in his shoes would have done the exact same thing. We'll never know, but let's hope so.

Also, Hayes already has more than $7 million in career earnings, so it's not like he'd consigned himself to another year working the counter at the Quik Stop. But still, knowing you're taking yourself out of the running for a year of career stability and wealth takes some serious situational ethics.

Would you do it?

Really?

I Peter 2: 13-17

While in Ohio visiting my daughter and son in law recently, I had the chance to go to attend church with them.  First Baptist Church of Mt. Orab, Tim Cline is the Senior Pastor.  I was there on the Sunday immediately following, our national election.  The pastor got up to speak and said that he actually had another sermon planned, when he sensed God changing what he was to speak about.

I know this message for extremely difficult to deliver, especially living in a town that is heavily Republican.  As I was leaving the service the pastor was in the foyer, shaking hands with the entire congregation and as I passed by, I told him that I knew his message was a word from the Lord and hard to deliver.  I told him I appreciated his boldness is delivering it.

I am sharing my interpretation of his message because I do believe it was a word from the Lord for those of us who may be discouraged about the elections and the days ahead.

I Peter 2:13-17 (titled in my bible) “RESPECTING PEOPLE IN AUTHORITY”

“For the Lord’s sake, accept all authority –the king as head of state, and the officials he has appointed.  For the king has sent them to punish all who do wrong and to honor those who do right.  It is God’s will that your good lives should silence those who make foolish accusations against you.  You are not slaves; you are free.  But your freedom is not an excurse to do evil.  You are free to live as God’s slaves.  Show respect for everyone. Love your Christian brothers and sisters.  Fear God.  Show respect for the king.”

The Christian motto is to keep on loving God’s people, love the brotherhood, keep on worshipping God and to fear God.  God is a lover of people, even those who have not made Him, Lord of their lives.  We are told to honor the king (that would be equivalent to our president today), to keep on respecting our government leaders.  We can respectfully disagree but we must be living our lives loving others, respecting those in authority and respond in kindness.

Consider these statements:

Cooperation is an effective witness.

Cooperation is an effective weapon; putting to silence the ignorance of foolish men.

God’s reputation is attached to our lives.

Rebellious attitudes cross out the cross.

During this transitional season of government, stop for a moment and read 1 Peter 2:13-17 on your own. You may find yourself needing to repent as I did.  Ask God to give you strength to respond in kindness, to represent his reputation well and to help us with what we are modeling to our kids.

God is in control, he knew who would win the election, and He is doing everything with the end in mind.  Is your trust ultimately in God or man?

CHANGING OF THE SEASONS

Last weekend I had the opportunity to fly to Ohio along with Paul's mom, Wendi, to visit my daughter and son in law, surprising them for thier 25th birthday's.  Did I just say 25?!  Wow that is a quarter of a century!  Which means that I am almost a half of century old!  UGH!!!!

Once you are in the midwest you are reminded that California has NO seasons.  For instance do we see scenery like this?:

Or like this?:

Ohio seasons2.JPG

It was amazingly beautiful and COLD!!!  The high on Sunday when I left was 40 degrees and windy!

Being there reminded me how the seasons of our lives change not only with our environment but with our age and life circumstances.  Watching your children become adults, is a whole new season.  When you are a guest in "their" home and find yourself asking if it is ok to get into "their" fridge, or where do they want something put away, reminds me that this life if short at best and we better live each day loving, giving, praying and sowing into the lives that matter most!

Can you believe she has a classroom with her name on the door?

The best son in law you could ever have!  Did I mention we are going to have a doctor in the family?

CHARACTER # 2 RESPECT

Respect

Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

Matthew 7:12 Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.  This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

Ephesians 4:29 Don’t use foul or abusive language.  Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Colossians 3:8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.

Psalms 4:4 Don’t sin by letting anger control you.  Think about it overnight and remain silent.

Romans 12:19 Dear friends, never take revenge.  Leave that to the righteous anger of God…

Luke 6:28  Bless those who curse you.  Pray for those who hurt you.

Philippians 4: 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do.  Remember, the Lord is coming soon.

ANOTHER ONE IN THE KINGDOM
I received this from Karie Rose, one of our mom's and small group leaders in Champs this past week.  We both wanted all of you to celebrate with us!  Have you asked your child?

All of heaven has stopped and the angels are celebrating!  Jessica Rose accepted Jesus into her heart!

We were doing morning devotions yesterday and discussing faith.  I asked if there was anyone at the table who wanted to accept Jesus into their heart and while Jack announced he already had, Jessica's hand shot up.  I guess that's what happens when you ask, right?

We prayed together and will continue to discuss this choice in her life this week, but I knew you would appreciate this milestone in Jessica's life.  This is the fruit of seeds sown by many who love her.  Thank you!

TRUSTWORTHINESS

Trustworthiness

Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable — do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal — stand by your family, friends and country.

Here are the Bible verses that affirm the character trait of trustworthiness:

Leviticus 19:11 Do not steal.  Do not deceive or cheat one another.

Proverbs 28:6 Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich.

 Proverbs 17:17a A friend is always loyal…

Colossians 3:9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.
