THE CALLING
Many of you have asked for a copy of what Kim Prezioso read in church yesterday.  I thought the easiest way to get that to you was to post it on the blog, please let others know you found it here!

I am a minister. I minister to the largest mission field in the world. I minister to children.
My calling is sure. My challenge is big. My vision is clear. My desire is strong. My influence is eternal. My impact is critical. My values are solid. My faith is tough. My mission is urgent. My purpose is unmistakable. My direction is forward. My heart is genuine. My strength is supernatural. My reward is promised. And my God is real.

I refuse to be dismayed, disengaged, disgruntled, discouraged or distracted. Neither will I look back, stand back, fall back, go back or sit back. I do not need applause, flattery, adulation, prestige, stature or veneration. I do not have time for business as usual, mediocre standards, small thinking, outdated methods, normal expectations, average results, ordinary ideas, petty disputes or low vision. I will not give up, give in, bail out, lie down, turn over, quit or surrender.
I will pray when things look bad. I will pray when things look good. I will move forward when others stand still. I will trust God when obstacles arise. I will work when the task is overwhelming. I will get up when I fall down.

My calling is to reach boys and girls
for God. It is too serious to be taken lightly, too urgent to be postponed, too vital to be ignored, too relevant to be overlooked, too significant to be trivialized, too eternal to be fleeting and too passionate to be quenched.
I know my mission. I know my challenge. I also know my limitations, my weaknesses, my fears and my problems. And I know my God. Let others get the praise. Let the church get the blessing. Let God get the glory.

I am a minister. I minister to children. This is who I am. This is what I do.
To MOMS OF 8 - 10 YEAR OLDS
I just reviewed a book entitled:

"The Care & Keeping of YOU"  The Body Book for Girls. Author: Valorie Lee Schaefer.

It is published by American Girl the ISBN #:
978-1-56247-666-3.  Cost is approximately $9.95

This is a great book to review with your girls and talks about the growing up process and taking care of their bodies.  This is not a biblical perspective however, I believe it does has an excellent presentation for our little girls to understand and ask questions.

Take a look at it on Amazon.com.

DAILY DEVOTIONS WITH YOUR KIDS OVER THE SUMMER
“Train up a child in the way he should go. When he is old, he will not turn away from it.”-Proverbs 22:6 (NIrV)

(This is written by Brett Humphrey a fellow Children's Pastor at Southwest Community Church)

A few years ago I was fortunate to take a flight in a single engine plane. I got a chance to sit in the co-pilot seat and could hear messages from the tower through the headsets. I was amazed that the pilot was in constant communication with control towers along our way and would receive instructions on minor course corrections he would receive along the way. As we traveled along our way, and our flight plan would be handed off to different control towers, each tower would give the pilot simple corrections to make and he would do it. After some time we touched down at our destination having been corrected many times along our journey; that is a lot like raising children.
As parents we are called to make corrections to our children along the way, which is called discipline. Sometimes we think of discipline as “punishment” but that isn’t the case. Discipline is nothing more than training, course corrections, gentle shepherding our children along the way. The more often we make these course corrections the easier they are and can be well received. It is much better for us, and our children, if we are constantly making these corrections as we go rather than having to make major corrections because our children are far off course.
I would like to challenge you to read through Proverbs with your children. There are 31 Proverbs so you can read one per day and make it all the way through Proverbs in a month. If you start today, you would read Proverbs 1, tomorrow the 2 and so on. There are a lot of great “conversation starters” found in Proverbs but this is a great book of wisdom for us and our children. This won’t take too long, 5 minutes to read through each Proverb and could provide a wonderful opportunity to spend time together in God’s Word. Why not give it a try?

What a great way to continue to lay a spiritual foundation in the lives of your children during the summer months while they are on summer break!

Feel free to share your results by posting on the Champs Facebook page.  We all could benefit and learn from each other.
WHY GOD MADE MOM'S
In light of Sunday being Mother's day I thought that those of us who still have a sense of humor at this point in the game, might appreciate a bit of humor to keep us going a little longer!

WHY GOD MADE MOMS

Answers given by 2nd grade school children to the following questions:

Why did God make mothers?

1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?

1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.

3. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of ?

1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the
world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string,
I think.

Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?

1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.

What kind of little girl was your mom?

1. My Mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.
3. They say she used to be nice.

What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?

1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on
beer?
3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to
chores?

Why did your mom marry your dad?

1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my Mom eats a lot.
2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
3. My grandma says that Mom didn't have her thinking cap on .

Who's the boss at your house?

1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof ball.
2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.
3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What's the difference between moms & dads?

1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.
2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.

3. Dads are taller & stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's

who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend's.
4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

What does your mom do in her spare time?

1. Mothers don't do spare time.
2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

What would it take to make your mom perfect?

1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic

surgery.

2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.

If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?

1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of
that.
2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it
and not me.
3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her
head. (My personal favorite!)

OUR ROOT SYSTEM

I recently read an interesting fact that is an analogy for our lives.  Ponder this and ask yourself the question!

Massive redwood trees (those that are upwards of 300 feet tall) actually have a very shallow root system.  They are only about 6' deep.  However they are about 125' wide at the largest measured place.  These trees would fall over if they didn't use a system of "holding hands."  They intertwine their roots with other redwoods and help each other stand.  ARE YOU HOLDING HANDS WITH ANYONE?  IF SO, WHO? IF NOT, WHY?

BACK ON TRACK...MAYBE!
For those of you who do read my blog I realize I have been on quite a bit of a hiatus.  Not intentionally, just that there is often much going on and when I try to sit down and write I don't always have all my ducks in a row to make some sense of what is swirling in my head and if I try to write I think no one would truly understand.  I think because I put myself in a box about wanting to write about helping our children live an outward focused life that when something does come up I don't think it will fit.  So I am giving myself freedom to just blog whatever comes to mind and if it fits with the outward focused life so be it, if it doesn't I pray it will still communicate to you for where you are at; in the moment.

I read something this morning that really spoke to my own heart and I am hoping it will to you as well. All too often as parents I think we forget the simply things in life and we also forget that our Abba Father, God, wants us to come to Him as children.  Let's practice this today and in the days to come.

Saying GRACE In A Restaurant…

Last week, I took my children to a  restaurant.
My six-year-old son  asked if he could say grace...
As we bowed our heads he said,

"God is good, God is great. Thank you for the
food, and I would even thank you more if Mom

get’s us ice  cream for dessert, and Liberty  and

    Justice for all!  Amen!"

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray.  Asking God for ice cream!  Why, I never!"

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?"

As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table.

He winked at my son and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer."

"Really?" my son asked. "Cross my heart," the man replied..

Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream... A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life.

He picked up his sundae and, without  a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already."

GOOD JOB!!!
How can you as parents really give positive feedback to your preteens?  You know those 5th and 6th graders who on days drive you crazy and on other days make you so proud.

It is at this age, we want to move them even more to being outward focused.  Here are a few ways to postitively pour into your preteen.

Participation: Never tell preteens they responded with the wrong answer.  Instead, praise them for thier participation and effort.

Presence: Attend preteens' sporting events, recitals, or school performances.  Just being at their event will be encouragement for their efforts.

Service:  Provide opportunities for preteens to serve. They really do want to be part of something bigger than them.

Personalization:  Give your kids positive feedback and praise that is unique to them.

I believe it is very important for preteens to start thinking about ministry opportunities now and for them to begin pursuing them.  Begin asking them what they think God is "calling" them to.  Have them write it down, pray over it together.  Then be sure to do all you can to create opportunities to see it happen.

That is what we do in Champs.  Every time we have an opportunity we ask a preteen to serve, or help out.  It exposes them to endless possibilities.
Happy New Year - Will This Year Be Different?
Happy New Year Everyone!

As we hit the ground running this year, I want to encourage each of you  to continue to ask God how you as parents can make a significant difference in your family, living an outward focused life.  I am going to continue to write on my blog how important it is to begin to live our lives in front of our kids being outward focused.  I am convinced that if we do this we have an opportunity in front of us to change a generation from being "me-focused" and having a sense of "entitlement" to growing up being Christ like by serving those around us.

We can not expect their school teachers, Sunday School teachers, tutors, sport coaches to be the ones to do this, it MUST start in the home.

If you haven't already, make a commitment to do things differently in this New Year, 2010 to get outside your own box and begin taking steps to look for opportunities to serve others around you.

For this post, I'll leave you with a quote from Mother Teresa.
When asked how did she ever help so many people in India, her response was, "If I hadn't carried (beggars dying on the street) the first one, I couldn't have carried the 30,000th!"

Pastor Julie
Are You Doing What God Called You To Do?

If you haven't ever thought about it before, that may sound like an odd question to you. You may be tempted to shrug it off and say, "Oh, I'm not really called to do anything. I'm not a pastor or a teacher or a minister of any kind...I guess I'm just what you might call a little finger on the Body of Christ."

Let me tell you something: No matter who you are, God has put a holy calling in you. He's designed you and called you to meet a need in the Body of Christ that nobody else can meet quite like you can.  Starting first with your children.

If we can begin applying our gifts with our children, they will see how to use what God has placed in them for the body of Christ ~ being outward focused!

It's Christmas time and like all of you I'll be celebrating with family and friends.  Keep thinking outward focus!

Till next year!!!

Pastor Julie

Beginning the Outward Focused Life
I want to continue with the focus of being outward focused and how we as parents can turn the "tide".

Remember in my last blog I gave you the definition of entitlement? The opposite of entitlement to me is a servant. It is so opposite of what the world strives for.  In the world power, success, money, being at the top is what matters.  In God's economy it is clear about what He calls us to.  Servanthood.

Now don't get me wrong, serving others is not natural to our culture, it is however supernatural in origin.  Serving others is one of the most powerful spiritual weapons we have.  There is probably nothing more unnatural than serving lost people with no strings attached in our "me-first" culture.

Our attitude is one of the thing we have control over.  Our attitude shapes the way we think about serving others, and servanthood is the attitude critical for personal fulfillment. Our attitude is the first things we pass on to our children.

We can't change the way people act, or your past, or the gifts you hav or don't have and you can't change circumstances that slime you.  But attitude probably has more to do with the direction of your life - something you can change.

The change must begin with us as parents.  Take this week to find one area in your attitude that you can make a change in with regards to serving others.  Watch what a difference it will make in you and your children.

The Twelve Rules of Christmas
At a time that you may be asking what can and cannot be done in public schools regarding Christmas, here is the legal answer to those questions.

Remember our kids should be a "light" wherever they are!

The Twelve Rules of Christmas®

(Compiled by attorneys for The Rutherford Institute)

Unfortunately, Christmas has become a time of controversy over what can or cannot be done in terms of celebrating the holiday. In order to clear up much of the misunderstanding, the following twelve rules are offered:

  1. Public school students’ written or spoken personal expressions concerning the religious significance of Christmas (e.g., T-shirts with the slogan, “Jesus Is the Reason for the Season”) may not be censored by school officials absent evidence that the speech would cause a substantial disruption.1

  2. So long as teachers are generally permitted to wear clothing or jewelry or have personal items expressing their views about the holidays, Christian teachers may not be prohibited from similarly expressing their views by wearing Christmas-related clothing or jewelry or carrying Christmas-related personal items.2

  3. Public schools may teach students about the Christmas holiday, including its religious significance, so long as it is taught objectively for secular purposes such as its historical or cultural importance, and not for the purpose of promoting Christianity.3

  4. Public school teachers may send Christmas cards to the families of their students so long as they do so on their own time, outside of school hours.4

  5. Public schools may include Christmas music, including those with religious themes, in their choral programs if the songs are included for a secular purpose such as their musical quality or cultural value or if the songs are part of an overall performance including other holiday songs relating to Chanukah, Kwanzaa, or other similar holidays.5

  6. Public schools may not require students to sing Christmas songs whose messages conflict with the students’ own religious or nonreligious beliefs.6

  7. Public school students may not be prohibited from distributing literature to fellow students concerning the Christmas holiday or invitations to church Christmas events on the same terms that they would be allowed to distribute other literature that is not related to schoolwork.7

  8. Private citizens or groups may display crèches or other Christmas symbols in public parks subject to the same reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions that would apply to other similar displays.8

  9. Government entities may erect and maintain celebrations of the Christmas holiday, such as Christmas trees and Christmas light displays, and may include crèches in their displays at least so long as the purpose for including the crèche is not to promote its religious content and it is placed in context with other symbols of the Holiday season as part of an effort to celebrate the public Christmas holiday through its traditional symbols.9

  10. Neither public nor private employers may prevent employees from decorating their offices for Christmas, playing Christmas music, or wearing clothing related to Christmas merely because of their religious content so long as these activities are not used to harass or intimidate others.10

  11. Public or private employees whose sincerely held religious beliefs require that they not work on Christmas must be reasonably accommodated by their employers unless granting the accommodation would impose an undue hardship on the employer.11

  12. Government recognition of Christmas as a public holiday and granting government employees a paid holiday for Christmas does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.12

WHAT ARE WE REALLY ON EARTH FOR?
I know it's been a while since I have written a blog, there is much stirring in my mind.

I've been praying about doing a bit of a series on my blog site regarding what are we really on earth for.  I know that sounds like a very deep topic, however, I believe it is very simple when you break down what the Bible has to say.

As parents I think we are really challenged much more today with raising our kids to be other focused vs "ME" focused!  The more I talk with people and the longer I do ministry and live in this world the more I see the generations coming up and out that live with an 'ENTITLEMENT' mentality.

The question is where did that come from?  Is it us as parents that somehow we instilled that in them?  Is it the culture around them, that somehow we were unable to do battle against?  Is it their choice as they move into young adulthood?

I'm not sure I have the answer for all of those questions, BUT...I do think I have a new approach that we can begin taking with our children NOW, at even the smallest of ages so that what we give, model, say and do can have the potential to undo a generation coming up and those that already are to become OUTWARD FOCUSED!

First definition for us to think about is; ENTITLEMENT. "to give somebody the right to have or to do something" other words that describe this is; 'right', 'power,' 'prerogative,' 'privilege,' and 'claim.'

Let's all think about that for a few days and then I'll come back and give some opposites that will hopefully encourage you for where you are at, or help set you on a new course for 2010 with how you do your own life, and your family life!

Stay tuned!
PRICELESS
One  Sunday morning,  the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the  foyer of the church staring up at a large  plaque.. It  was covered with names and  small American  flags   mounted  on either side of it. The six-year old had been  staring at the plaque for some time, so the  pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy,  and said quietly, 'Good morning  Alex.'

'Good  morning Pastor,' he replied, still focused on  the plaque... 'Pastor, what is this?  '

The  pastor said, 'Well son, it's a memorial to all  the young men and women who died in the  service.'
Soberly, they just stood together,  staring at the large  plaque.

Finally,  little Alex's voice, barely audible and  trembling with fear  asked,

THE FUNNY SIDE OF PARENTING
After church on Sunday, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, "Mom, I've decided I'm going to be a minister when I grow up."

"That's okay with me," the mother said, "But what made you decide to be a minister?"

"Well," the boy replied, "If I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell than to sit still and listen."

Good Stuff To Take Advanatage Of!
I know that there are so many opportunities presented to us daily, a buffet of items that often makes it hard to choose.  We have limited time and resources.  I don't know about you but I find myself having to weigh out how many things I can "go" to or "take part in".

I know I don't have the corner market on the "best" of the "best", but I'd like to put my two cents (or is that 2?) in for what I think are "don't miss" opportunities coming up.

This weekend, October 2-4, 2009 is the showing of LORD SAVE US FROM YOUR FOLLOWERS!  Seriously consider going to see the film and bring a neighbor or friend who is a pre-christian.  I promise it will plant seeds and start a conversation.  If you are asking yourself the question, I don't know who to ask, you may need to ask yourself a deeper question; "why don't I know someone to ask?"

The next thing coming up November 5-7, 2009 is THE SELFISH GIANT! Our very own Between the Lines, Life Group full of amazing talented actors and actresses will be preforming not only for our church community, but for the Santa Clarita Valley community.  This is another amazing opportunity to bring neighbors and friends who have never stepped foot on our campus.  This play is targeted for kids of all ages. Be sure to invite their parents as well.

Saturday, October 31, 2009 is what we call "LITE NITE!" Yet another opportunity to host an evening at your home with other fellow Sanctuarians to be a light in your neighborhood.  You can pick up a reader at our Welcome Center to get more information about why we do what we do.

Are you seeing the trend?  All 3 of these opportunities are about reaching out to others in our community, in your neighborhood, or to the families your kids play sports with.

It's time to start looking out beyond our homes and our walls and begin inviting.  People just want to be asked!

PARENTING ~ WHY IS IT SO HARD?
Lately I've had many opportunities to answer parenting questions from people in and outside of our church.  I'm sure you would agree with me that parenting has to been one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles that we take on as adults!  What I know for sure is that the older I get I realize more and more that I don't know as much as I think I do.

Like you I needed and still need all the help I can get.  And much to my dismay, I don't always have the "correct" or "right" answers.  Because of this, I welcome outside resources when they come along and provide solid help to me.  When that happens I am compelled to pass it on to all of you!

There is an upcoming Parenting Seminar coming up, locally here in Santa Clarita on Sunday November 1, 2009.  Below are the details about the day.  Valencia Hills Community Church is hosting this event and I would like each and everyone of you to consider attending if you have a child ages 2-18.

I'm so serious about taking advantage of this event that even though they don't offer childcare, I am willing to recruit our "own" teens/young adults to watch your kids for "FREE" at the Sanctuary while you attend.  You need to contact me at the office or via wecare@thesanctuarychurch.com to sign up.

Here is the link for you to register online:

http://www.incm.org/seminars_swth_dates.html
You will need to copy and paste and put this in a new window to get to the site to register for Valencia.

Make time, clear your calendar and take advantage of the low cost for a very good resource.  In the meantime I continue to pray for each and everyone of you as we do our best to parent and capture the hearts of our kids!

SUSTAINABILITY
Seems like being a Children's Pastor that I should write my blog about being a parent or how kids learn the Bible, or ...

The longer I am in Children's Ministry the more I know; if we as the parents are healthy in all areas of our lives that our kids have a better chance of being healthy as they grow into young teens and adults.

I know I'm a little slow on the uptake and you probably all know that already.  But since I'm sharing my new found revelation with you; you'll have to indulge me from time to time as I write about things that apply to us as adults.  My hope and prayer is if we are doing the right thing, our kids with "CATCH" it and do the same.  Don't kid yourself, we still need to parent and coach our kids, but working on us, may be understated!  So here I go:

In John 15, Jesus describes sustainability in this manner: “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the Vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain” (John 15:4, 5, 16 NKJV).

David’s life is a great example regarding sustainability. His “abiding” is seen through his constant inquiring of the Lord about every situation in his early life. Unfortunately, we also see the sad results for David, his family, and the nation of  Israel when he moved away from this dependency on God. The downfall began when David became confident in his own ability to lead and make decisions on his own.

What about us? Are we living sustainable lives?  Our depth of soul comes from the well of life in the Holy Spirit. That well draws our roots deep, which in turn produces healthy branches tightly grafted to the vine. A tree full of healthy fruit is a great picture of what our lives can be when we are tightly grafted to Jesus Christ. This is the posture of sustainable fruitfulness.

Just some light thinking for a Monday morning!
